The graduate students in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville are pleased to announce the Fourth Vernacular Symposium which is scheduled to take place as a hybrid event, with options for in-person or virtual participation. We invite submissions from all areas of French, German, and Spanish Studies that widely interpret and investigate questions related to the conference theme.

We are interested in research which engages one or more of the following issues in modern foreign language, literature, and cinema:
· Borders and binaries
· Performativity and gender
· Language and performance
· Transnational Studies
· Transcultural and Intercultural Studies
· Literature, performance, performativity
· Noncanonical authors and artists

While our journal is limited to graduate students, we invite both graduate students and faculty to submit a 250-word abstract for Vernacular symposium. Panel proposals are also welcome; please include an abstract and short bio for each presenter on the panel. Submissions are not limited to the conference theme, but should be related to French, German, or Spanish Studies. For inquiries and submissions, contact Mallory Nischan at mnischan chez vols.utk.edu by December 31, 2021. Please indicate whether you intend to present virtually or in-person. Participants will be notified by mid-January.

Please do not hesitate to share the cfp widely! It may be of interest to those on this list that the committee is planning to invite a keynote speaker working in French.
Sincerely,
