Courts and royal households played a crucial role in the development of the political organization of early modern monarchies. The Duchy of Burgundy was the first to establish a highly sophisticated household that approximated perfection at the organizational level, and for this reason was recognised by contemporary monarchies. Philip I introduced this so called ‘Burgundian household’ at the court of Castile. Soon it managed to reinforce its preeminence over other less developed households of the Spanish monarchy, such as those of Aragon and Castile, and it became the sole household of the Universal Monarchy.

This book presents a wide-ranging and in depth portrait of the exceptional Burgundian household of the Spanish Habsburg kings, and reinterprets its role at the heart of the Spanish monarchy. This reference work, by the hands of several experts in the field, is a must have for every researcher interested in early modern political and institutional history. All texts are in Spanish.
